In general because naproxen(FLANAX) has a longer half life or duration of action it should be generally avoided during breast feeding. There is limited human data to adequately assess the safety of naproxen use during breast feeding. The half life of naproxen or time for half of the drug to leave the human body is approximately 8 hours. One approach can be for a breast feeding mother to pump her breasts and store her milk upon awakening in the morning then ingest a dose of naproxen and provide the stored breast milk by bottle to the child for the next 8 hours.
Having waited 8 hours after ingesting a dose of naproxen before breast feeding will minimize the risk of the infant’s exposure to naproxen.
